72 Hours in Kanazawa: Part 3 — Exploring Omicho Food Market
I didn’t know what to expect on this final leg of my Kanazawa journey. Day two was magical, ending even faster than it arrived, sadly. Now here I was, drifting into day three of this amazing adventure, heading to Omicho Market.
This foodie paradise, commonly known as the “Kitchen of Kanazawa,” was established over three hundred years ago, housing 180+ restaurants and food stalls under a single roof. I had only learned about this place four days prior.
My plan was to arrive early, hoping to beat the tourist crowds by taking a taxi before public transit began operating. When I arrived, most of the food stalls and restaurants were just starting to open, with some still closed. Not a single tourist in sight, yay, well, except for yours truly of course! If I wasn’t an official foodie before this trip, it’s fair to say Omicho Market helped change that.
The vast array of colorful fruits, vegetables, and dazzling seafood options had me hooked. But, what I liked most about this place, despite it being a supposed tourist draw, was it felt undiscovered. Most of the patrons at the stalls seemed to already know the shopkeepers.
In fact, I didn’t see a single person in the entire building who might easily identify as a tourist. The local tinge was nice. I felt like a welcome guest, visiting a large tight-knit family. I hope you enjoy this adventure as much as I did!
