"Discover Tokyo's Oeshiki Festival & Kamata Nightlife: A Perfect Blend of Tradition and Modernity"

Tokyo, Japan - a city synonymous with creativity and curiosity, has captivated my heart during my time spent commuting between here and my hometown of Toronto. In Tokyo, there is always a new story to share, and today I'll introduce you to two lesser-known areas in the Ota Ward that hold a special place in my heart: Ikegami and Kamata.

Located 14 kilometers from central Tokyo, Ikegami and Kamata sit on the southern edge of the city. As I explored the area, I felt an overwhelming sense of Zen simply strolling through the historic temple grounds. Here, ancient history and ultra-modern city life exist in perfect harmony, an uncommon synthesis that resonates with the soul.

Ikegami is home to beautiful gardens that encircle temple buildings, offering a tranquil space for reflection. The meticulously designed and maintained landscapes showcase traditional Japanese elements, seasonal flowers, and the majestic main hall, or hon-do, originally built in 1282.

This structure, dating back to 1788, is a prime example of traditional Japanese architecture. The hon-do's most striking feature is its large thatched roof, which gracefully curves at the corners. Skilled craftsmen have adorned the exterior with intricate wood carvings and gold-leaf accents, providing a glimpse into Japan's rich aesthetic heritage.

After exploring Ikegami, I took a 3-minute subway ride to Kamata, a place known for its vibrant nightlife. As the sun sets and neon lights flicker to life, the area transforms into a hub of activity filled with izakayas and restaurants lining the narrow alleyways.

Kamata's nightlife is laid-back yet eclectic, with the sound of laughter and clinking glasses filling the air. Izakayas offer an informal atmosphere for socializing and enjoying a variety of small plates meant to be shared among friends. Stroll through the streets, and you'll find street vendors selling everything from traditional Japanese sweets to fresh seafood.

Each October, the Ota Ward hosts the Oeshiki festival, a grand celebration commemorating Nichiren, the founder of the Nichiren sect of Buddhism. The festival, famous for its elaborate procession, attracts visitors from all over Japan and beyond.

The temple grounds become illuminated by lanterns, while taiko drums, flute music, and chanting fill the air. Food stalls, adorned with vibrant banners and mouthwatering displays, contribute to the excitement and conviviality that lie at the heart of Japanese society.

As the night comes to a close, I find myself back in the bustling streets of Kamata. Despite the hour, the area remains abuzz with activity as people revel in the unique atmosphere that only Kamata can offer. This exploration of Tokyo's lesser-known areas provides a glimpse into the city's soul, highlighting the enchanting hidden gems that await beyond the usual tourist hotspots.

A Taste of Zen in Japan: The Ultimate Nikko Adventure

Today, I'm excited to take you on an unforgettable adventure to the captivating town of Nikko, nestled in the Tochigi prefecture of Japan. Located just a couple of hours from the bustling metropolis of Tokyo, Nikko is the perfect getaway for urbanites like me who crave a serene escape amidst pristine nature and fascinating history.

The journey from Tokyo by train was a nostalgic experience, reigniting my childhood fascination with trains. As the beautiful countryside rolled by, I felt an incredible sense of contentment and anticipation for what awaited me in Nikko. Upon arrival, I was greeted by Nikko's lush green landscape, majestic mountain ranges, and crystal-clear rivers that flowed through the town, instantly showcasing the contrast between this paradise and the bustling city I had left behind.

My first stop was the iconic Shinkyo Bridge, a historic and sacred site believed to have been initially constructed by a god in the early 8th century. With its striking red color set against the serene backdrop of the Daiya River and the surrounding forest, it was impossible not to be captivated by its beauty.

Nikko National Park, which covers over 1,200 square kilometers, was next on my list. The park boasts breathtaking landscapes, including mountains, lakes, waterfalls, and hot springs. While it's impossible to explore the entire park in a single day, I took advantage of my short trip to immerse myself in the enchanting surroundings and enjoy the rejuvenating onsens for which Nikko is famous.

During my exploration of the town, I stumbled upon a delightful confectionery shop called Miyamae Dango, housed in a charming architectural gem. It was the perfect way to end my first day in Nikko.

The following day, I visited the awe-inspiring Nikko Toshogu Shrine, a 17th-century Shinto shrine dedicated to the memory of Tokugawa Ieyasu, a prominent Japanese shogun. With its intricate carvings, colorful paintings, and gold leaf decorations, the shrine is a must-visit destination that offers a unique glimpse into Japan's rich cultural heritage.

On my last day, I rented a car and ventured to the serene Lake Chuzenji, a mountain lake and town nestled in the heart of Nikko National Park. At an altitude of 1,269 meters above sea level, it was incredible to think that this enchanting destination was situated higher than Toronto's CN Tower! I spent my time strolling along the shores of the lake, soaking in its natural beauty, and marveling at the majestic Kegon Falls. The area's vibrant foliage during the fall season creates a mesmerizing, colorful display, making it the ideal time to visit.

Nikko, with its stunning natural beauty, rich history, and rejuvenating onsens, is an unforgettable destination that offers something for everyone. I hope this journey has inspired you to explore and create your own memories in this magical place. Don't forget to share your experiences, and until next time, happy travels!

72 Hours in Kanazawa: Part 3 — Exploring Omicho Food Market

Upbeat Kanazawa Journey

I didn’t know what to expect on this final leg of my Kanazawa journey. Day two was magical, ending even faster than it arrived, sadly. Now here I was, drifting into day three of this amazing adventure, heading to Omicho Market.

This foodie paradise, commonly known as the “Kitchen of Kanazawa,” was established over three hundred years ago, housing 180+ restaurants and food stalls under a single roof. I had only learned about this place four days prior.

My plan was to arrive early, hoping to beat the tourist crowds by taking a taxi before public transit began operating. When I arrived, most of the food stalls and restaurants were just starting to open, with some still closed. Not a single tourist in sight, yay, well, except for yours truly of course! If I wasn’t an official foodie before this trip, it’s fair to say Omicho Market helped change that.

The vast array of colorful fruits, vegetables, and dazzling seafood options had me hooked. But, what I liked most about this place, despite it being a supposed tourist draw, was it felt undiscovered. Most of the patrons at the stalls seemed to already know the shopkeepers.

In fact, I didn’t see a single person in the entire building who might easily identify as a tourist. The local tinge was nice. I felt like a welcome guest, visiting a large tight-knit family. I hope you enjoy this adventure as much as I did!

72-Hours in Kanazawa🚶🏽Exploring Kenroku-en Landscape Garden (Part 2 of 4)

Day 2 Kanazawa Adventure - Kenroku-en Garden

There's nothing quite like the thrill of exploring a new destination without a rigid itinerary! In this video, I embrace the spirit of spontaneity as I embark on day 2 of my Kanazawa adventure, heading to the enchanting Kenroku-en Garden—a gem I discovered just hours before hopping on a bus!

Kenroku-en is a beautifully preserved landscape garden, renowned as one of the three most exquisite in Japan. The stunning 11.2-hectare grounds took nearly 200 years to complete before opening to the public in 1871. Stepping into this magical oasis, I was immediately struck by the overwhelming sense of serenity and tranquility.

The verdant greenery, immaculately maintained grounds, traditional architecture, and picturesque ponds interweaving throughout the garden create a breathtaking tapestry. While words alone can't fully capture the sublime experience, I hope this video conveys a glimpse of its splendor.

Foodie In Kanazawa! ☕ Amazing Coffee Breakfast in Japan

Sweet Delights and Cozy Mornings at Fluffy Pancake Cafe in Kanazawa, Japan

I've always had a sweet tooth, and Japan never disappoints when it comes to satisfying my cravings. The good thing about sweets in Japan is that they tend to be less sugary than their Western counterparts, which I've taken as an excuse to indulge in all things sweet. During my recent visit to Kanazawa, I stumbled upon a charming little cafe called Fluffy Pancake Cafe, and I couldn't resist checking it out.

As I walked into the cafe, my senses were immediately awakened by the delicious aroma of freshly made pancakes. The menu was filled with mouthwatering options, but sadly, they didn't offer any sausage accompaniments, which I usually enjoy with my pancakes. Nevertheless, I opted for the most popular item on the menu and a refreshing Japanese herb juice to wash it down.

Having been out early filming the beautiful sights of Kanazawa, I was looking forward to savoring my breakfast in peace. I usually start my day with a cup of coffee, but today, I had to hit the ground running without my usual caffeine fix to capture the best shots before the tourist crowds arrived. So, Fluffy Pancake Cafe was a welcome treat and an opportunity to fuel up for the rest of the day.

As my order arrived, I marveled at the presentation of the fluffy pancakes, which looked absolutely scrumptious. Upon taking my first bite, I was instantly smitten by their light, airy texture and delicious taste. Although the portion was quite large, I couldn't help but savor every bite.

If you ever find yourself in Kanazawa, I highly recommend paying a visit to Fluffy Pancake Cafe. The city itself is a wonderful place to explore, with friendly locals, a rich cultural heritage, and a manageable size that makes getting around a breeze. And, of course, the food – including the unforgettable pancakes at Fluffy Pancake Cafe – is simply divine. So, don't miss out on the opportunity to enjoy some sweet delights and cozy mornings in this charming Japanese city.

"Okonomiyaki Haven: Exploring Hiroshima's Unique Cuisine"

When you think of Hiroshima, a foodie's paradise may not be the first thing that comes to mind. However, on a recent trip, I discovered that Hiroshima can be a delight for food lovers! My wandering feet, accompanied by two friends, took us to an okonomiyaki haven in the heart of downtown Hiroshima City.

Okonomiyaki is a popular pan or flat-top grilled dish made with batter, eggs, cabbage, and an array of other ingredients. In fact, the toppings vary so greatly that it's reflected in the dish's name; "okonomi" which literally means "to one's liking." It's a well-known dish throughout Japan, but it's especially popular in cities like Osaka and Hiroshima, the latter being the location in today's video.

After indulging in this mouth-watering and finger-licking treat, we set out to explore the vibrant nightlife area of Nagarekawacho. Comprised of numerous restaurants, bars, and izakayas, it reminded me of a smaller, cleaner, and less shady version of Tokyo's Kabukicho district, minus the red-light component!

As you'll see in the video, Nagarekawacho is a lively area that attracts locals and visitors alike, and it's definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a fun night out in Hiroshima. I hope you enjoy the video and get inspired to visit Hiroshima and experience its delicious food and vibrant nightlife for yourself!

"Tokyo Walk & Talk: Episode 2"

In Episode 2 of Tokyo Walk and Talk, I wake up early on a Sunday morning in search of an ancient Temple called, Gokokuji, close to the Otsuka area of Tokyo. Rumour has it that it's a beautiful setting for some cool, cinematic shots, especially if you get there early enough to catch that magical golden hour.

I’ve heard that it is a particularly exquisite photo opportunity, especially during what is called the golden hour.

The challenge though, as I've mentioned here before, catching Golden Hour during the summer months in Tokyo, which usually means getting up at around 3am to arrive at your destination no later than 3:30 am!

For me, that's been a struggle, and I've yet to achieve this somehow elusive goal.  It has eluded me thus far but I still love being out here at 6 am on a weekend - it’s a whole other experience seeing this usually bustling city so quiet and slow. It leaves me with more time to explore and discover all kinds of gems on my own.

Escaping the Hustle and Bustle: A Day Trip to Hakone, Japan

Nestled high in the mountains of Kanagawa Prefecture, Hakone is a charming small town just an hour and a half from the bustling metropolis of Tokyo. With a population of no more than 15,000, Hakone is a top onsen (hot spring) destination in Japan and offers a serene respite for travelers looking to experience a different side of the country.

While I usually prefer big cities, I was eager to explore the unique vibes of this quaint town. In this blog post, I'll share my experiences from my 24-hour visit to Hakone and introduce you to four must-visit gems: The Hakone Open-Air Museum, The Hakone Jinja Shrine, Lake Ashi, and Gora Hanaougi Ryokan—where I had my very first hot spring experience in Japan!

Hakone: More than Just Onsens

Hakone may be known as the onsen capital of Japan, but it has so much more to offer. During my brief stay, I discovered that Hakone boasts an incredible mix of culture, art, and natural beauty, all within a relatively small area. Upon arrival at the train station, I picked up a discount pass which gave me unlimited rides on various routes, covering most of the popular destinations in Hakone. It was a convenient and budget-friendly way to explore the town.

A Unique Art Experience: The Hakone Open-Air Museum

I've always loved museums, so when I heard about the Hakone Open-Air Museum, I knew I had to visit. Living up to its name, this unique museum features most of its exhibits outdoors, surrounded by picturesque landscapes. Despite the clouds and light rain, I was amazed by the stunning architecture and breathtaking scenes of nature throughout the museum grounds. It was a truly one-of-a-kind art experience.

A Spiritual Stop: The Hakone Jinja Shrine

Situated on the hills above Lake Ashi, the Hakone Jinja Shrine has been a spiritual site since 757. Steeped in history, the shrine offers a serene and peaceful atmosphere that allows visitors to connect with the ancient culture of Japan. It was a memorable stop on my day trip to Hakone.

Breathtaking Nature: Lake Ashi

After visiting the shrine, I headed down to the scenic Lake Ashi, also known as Ashinoko. The lake's calm waters and stunning surroundings made for a picturesque experience, providing a lovely contrast to the bustling energy of Tokyo.

A Relaxing Soak: Gora Hanaougi Ryokan

My Hakone trip wouldn't have been complete without a visit to Gora Hanaougi Ryokan, where I had my first onsen experience. From the welcoming staff and delicious food to the world-class facilities, everything about this hot spring resort was exceptional. It was the perfect way to unwind after a day of exploring.

As my brief 24-hour adventure in Hakone came to an end, I boarded the train back to Tokyo with a newfound appreciation for both the tranquility of small-town life and the excitement of the big city. Each has its own unique charm and flavor, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to experience both. So if you ever find yourself in Japan, be sure to make a trip to the enchanting town of Hakone—you won't be disappointed!
